Make Quizmaker slides Automatically Advance

With the power of branching inside of Articulate Quizmaker ’09 you can develop media-rich, interactions that guide users to specific outcomes based on their responses. In Tom Kuhlmann’s Tutorial he demonstrates how this can be done.

Although Tom’s method is great when branching to static or specific slides, this isn’t ideal when attempting to branch to a Group of Randomized questions. Because Quizmaker’s branching feature requires the author to select a specific destination slide, branching to a slide that is part of a randomized group may not work as expected. In fact, if the chosen destination slide is not included in the randomly drawn slides, the branching will fail and the quiz will not advance. The workaround to this dilemma is to branch to a Blank slide just before the Randomized Group of Questions, maybe asking the student to “Please select the Next button to Advance”. This method is fine, but does take away from content flow, by forcing students to select the Feedback window and then the next button just to move on.

What can we do to streamline the branching flow?

The QM-AutoAdvance_v1.0 script outlined in this Tip was developed to workaround the above noted issue or to allow slides within Quizmaker to automatically advance when a particular slide is reached. Please watch the Screenr below to implement this workaround. The patch or file used in the Screenr can be downloaded below.

Usage:

1. Download the QM-AutoAdvance_v1.0.zip file.
2. Extract the QM-AutoAdvance_v1.0.swf file.
3. For the QM slide you wish to have automatically advance, insert the QM-AutoAdvance_v1.0.swf file as a Flash Movie using the following Flash Movie Properties:

– Display in slide
– Movie starts playing automatically

Please note: Although this has been fully tested, this method is not supported by Articulate.
